Turners Beer Bottle Shop

Beer can be a tricky one! With its many flavours and variations it can be difficult to know which is for you. When out and about we often stumble across row upon row of bottles, cans and taps each with funky eye catching labels trying to lure you in. It’s a tough choice!

Do you try something new or resort to that old favourite?! One small decision can result in face pulling for the next half hour whilst your mates look smug having gone for an old faithful.

But what if you have a sense of adventure? What if you are missing out on your new favourite tipple? Keeping that in mind we decided to venture to a bastion of beer to broaden our horizons. Welcome to Turners Beer Bottle Shop – where there is a new favourite on every shelf!

Turners Beer Bottle Shop opened their doors in May 2014 and is run by David and Rosie who have always been passionate about good quality beer. The idea to open their own shop came about when on a road trip up the west coast of America in 2011. After the birth of their first child in 2014 they decided to leave the ‘Big Smoke’ and return to their home city of Sheffield to make their dream become a reality.

Situated on Abbeydale Road, Turners is a cool and quirky beer shop dedicated to providing us hard working folk of Sheffield with the perfect stop to broaden our knowledge of craft beer. What really sets Turners apart from your average off license are the growlers that are filled with a beer you’ll struggle to find on the shelf. Using a counter pressure filling unit that floods a 1 or 2 litre glass bottle with inert CO2 gas, not only preventing the beer from oxidising but it helps the beer maintain it’s carbonation. The same technology is used in microbreweries to bottle beer.

Customers get to choose from 4 different types of beer and the it will stay fresh for up to 4 weeks. We found the 4 week warning slightly arbitrary as it was so tasty it disappeared in one sitting! However some of you might be slightly more reserved! We were lucky enough to try Magic Rock Cannonball and oh boy was it delicious!

And if you’re still wondering what a growler is, well it looks like this…

David and Rosie also plan to strengthen their connection with local breweries by hosting taster evenings and tap takeovers; where one brewery supplies the beer for all of the taps. David explained that “it’s about finding the best beers and spreading the word about them” and he couldn’t think of a better place to do it than in Sheffield. As people here don’t just like real ale, they LOVE it!

So if you’re slightly adventurous, sustainably minded and love a good beer! Then pop down and sample one of their guest ales.
