The Showroom Cinema

Residents of Sheffield are privy to a few well know facts. Firstly Yorkshire being God’s own land and secondly Sheffield being home to one of the greatest independent cinemas in the country or maybe even the world.

The Showroom is one of Europe’s largest independent cinemas and for us Sheffielders it is also a warm welcoming presence when you arrive home via the train station.

The Showroom is situated in an art deco building; once home to Kennings car showroom. To save the beautiful building from demolition, Chief exec Ian Wild and friends managed to persuaded the Council to give them free rein in 1989. Armed with a vision to create four luxury auditoria, provide space to educate and house a café/bar, the Sheffield Media & Exhibition Centre was born. The Showroom opened its first two screens in 1995, with the other two opening in 1998, just as Sheffield’s Cultural Industries Quarter was beginning to take shape. Which means if our math is correct it’ll be their 20th anniversary next year. I wonder what they’ve got in store as a surprise!

Once in through the doors, one is ushered through to a creative realm, welcomed by their friendly staff to get lost in a classical masterpiece, a voguish foreign film or even the latest sci-fi offering from Hollywood. With an eclectic assortment of films on offer, their world is your oyster.

Being an independent is something The Showroom is mighty proud of. They like to change the game and break all the rules by surprising us on a weekly basis with their tailored program and offering us top notch food in their cafe/bar area. They work closely with local farmers, with an aim to source their supplies as close to home as possible. Their menu is continually changing with the seasons and, with a daily specials board, they can cater for all. And if you’re like us, we’d recommend one of their home baked cakes.

However, the Showroom cinema is more than just a cinema or a cafe/bar. Throughout the year they house a unique series of events, providing opportunities to gather different people from all walks of life for a common and yet memorable journey. From the much-loved Doc Fest to the characterful Sheffield Adventure Film Festival, or ShAFF for short, there is something on offer for everyone. They have something going on nearly every night so visit their website to find out more.

The owners have a great passion for what they do. Please show your appreciation and keep supporting a Sheffield treasure where the stimulus never stops.
