Picture House Social

Low key, understated, funky and cool are all words that spring to mind when the Picture House Social crops up in conversation. It’s a place where word of mouth brings people in rather than fliers, posters and social media.

A place where those in the know have the upper hand and those who aren’t in the know definitely want to be! I think the word “Speakeasy” describes it best and I know they wouldn’t shy away from a reputation like that!

Picture House Social

The Picture House Social is the brainchild of the owners of Division Streets The Great Gatsby. It opened its doors in September 2014, breathing life back into the 1920’s grade II listed building that used to be known as the ‘Picture Palace’ due to its opulence and luxurious décor.

The small, non-descript doorway that fronts the Picture House does not require a special knock or the utterance of a secret password, yet as you descend the steep staircase you are being transported back in time to a place of low lights, dark-neutral tones, smoky voices and the smell of ‘cool’ in the air.

Once in, the friendly and knowledgeable bar staff are happy to chat about what beers are on offer and which of that months’ 12 cocktails would suit your refined palate. The Picture House are constantly striving for fresh and innovative ideas; on the beer front this comes from local beer connoisseurs Hop Hideout and on the cocktail side the drive to create 144 cocktails a year will mean that every taste bud can be tantalised, satiated and intrigued with unique combinations and flavours.

Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays are the party nights here at the Picture House Social. Tom J Newell is in charge on Thursdays, with monthly quizzes and feature nights on musical icons there is sure to be something that takes your fancy. If you’re just looking for music to bop, boogie and ‘get down’ to then Tesla Sessions (DJ David Glover) and Plenty Vibes (DJ Ashley Holmes) on Fridays and Saturdays maybe more your cup of tea.

So with a drink for everyone and funky beats coming from the DJ box what else could a bar possibly provide? Feeling a bit peckish? That’s probably due to the smell of fresh Neapolitan-style pizza wafting through from the street-food styled canteen in the back! Head Chef Ste Mullins only uses the highest quality, authentic ingredients to give a true taste of Italy and with starting prices giving change from fiver you can’t go wrong!

So, drinks: tick. Music: tick. Food: tick. What’s that noise? Its sounds like “ping-pong, ping-pong” …..well that’ll be the ping-pong tables then. That’s right, the Picture House Social has made ping pong cool again and the level in Sheffield is definitely on the rise, so Xu Xin you better watch out!

All these offerings are on a daily basis and with small, intimate gigs hidden away in the back with bands such as Drenge, Blossomer, Seize the Chair and Hey Sholay, and the recently launched cinema room is there anything these guys can’t do? One thing’s for sure is that they are at the forefront of the Abbeydale Road boom and you definitely want to be a part of it, trust me!
