Music in the Round

Music In The Round is the UK’s leading promoter of chamber music outside of London.

For those of you not in the know, like myself, chamber music is a form of classical music that is composed for a small group of instruments—traditionally a group that could fit in a palace chamber or a large room. We are a bit short of palaces in Sheffield and so Music in the Round is based at the Crucible Studio Theatre.

Founded in 1984 by Peter Cropper, leader of the famous Lindsay String Quartet, who sadly passed away last year, their vision is to make chamber music accessible and enjoyable to all. Concerts run throughout the year and each May they put on a festival with concerts, plays, workshops, talks and, this year, even a bake off.

Artists at the festival are invited to speak to the audiences about the music they play, breaking down the barriers between them. The spoken introductions are informal, often witty and always illuminating for all audience members, whether you’re a first timer or a classical music veteran!

In 2005 Music in the Round successfully established a new eleven piece resident ensemble in Sheffield, Ensemble 360 who have won the hearts of audiences in Sheffield, Barnsley and Doncaster. They also run an extensive participation programme – Music in the Community – engaging children, young people and adults alike. This programme includes workshops for babies and toddlers through to huge family concerts and more.

Tickets to concerts start at £5 for under 35’s and first time attendees and with concerts, not only, in classical music but jazz and folk too then there is something for everyone.
