Frankly my Deer

Nestled in the heart of Sheffield’s newly christened antiques quarter, Frankly My Deer is a treasure trove for trinkets and jewellery, cards, pictures and paintings and just about anything else you can imagine.

Karla Gabbitas is the owner of this wonderful shop; originally qualified in interior design, she retrained as a graphic designer and started making gift cards at home to sell in cafes and local shops. In 2013 she took a small space in Vintedge but a year later had outgrown this and was searching for a new spot. 361 Abbeydale Road came up for grabs and, with the busy footfall that this up and coming area receives, it seemed like too good an opportunity to miss.

Karla didn’t want to just sell her own designs and work but create an environment where other local artists, jewellers and creative minds could show and sell their work too. She has divided the shop into 75 spaces and she rents these out on a weekly basis to others to display their products. Once a space is rented it is essentially a “mini shop” for the individual to do with what they like. Karla then mans (or womans) the shop leaving exhibitors free to continue their creative flow!

It is an idea that, until chatting with Karla the other day, I had never heard of but it is an idea that makes so much sense. It’s a market in a shop and everyone loves markets. The shop has such a variety of products that there is something for everyone and a gift available for all their friends too!

Shopping at independents throughout Sheffield really gives me a sense of enormous wellbeing. People don’t set up an independent shop, café, bar or business because they have to, they do it because they want to, they do it because they have a passion for that area of expertise and they want to show it to the world. They want others to enjoy this passion with them and to be inspired to do what they want with their life. Frankly My Deer has this effect on you. Upon entering you are struck by a friendly, vibrant atmosphere, one that oozes creativity and makes you want to be a part of it in some small way.

Karla has created, not only an excellent gift shop, but also a hive of local activity and passion that leaves all who enter with a sense of happiness and energy.
