Welcome to the greatest city! Here’s our Freshers guide to Sheffield

You’ve just got off at the station, kissed your family goodbye and filled your suitcase with beans and super noodles. So what’s next?

We know being a student often involves a lot of drinking, late night kebabs and bleary eyed 9am lectures, but that’s not all. It’s about being independent, making new friends, and most importantly it’s about exploring your new home.

So welcome you to the greatest city, and here’s our guide to those spots that’ll have all your friends back home dying to come visit.

Cocoa Wonderland

Are you the kind of the person constantly longing for hot chocolate? If so, you’re our kinda people. And Cocoa does a pretty mean hot chocolate that’ll leave you satisfied whilst longing for more. As well as creating mugs of joy, they also run monthly knit and book clubs, check out their social media for more info. It’s the perfect opportunity to try something different, meet new people as well as a great excuse for more hot chocolate!

Roco Creative Co-op

Behind one yellow door lays endless possibilities. Kind of like Narnia but with lots of alcohol, coffee and a scrumptious lunch menu. Roco have recently changed the world of outdoor spaces in the city by opening up a rooftop terrace that is the perfectly situated next to Sheffield Uni. They have a host of events planned for the next year so make sure you pop down and check out the view.

Union Street

A place to work, meet and collaborate in the heart of the Sheffield. They host weekly pop-ups from the likes of Pie Eyed on Thursdays and the lovely Twin Café on Friday. It’s also perfectly placed next door to the Roundabout Charity Shop, a local charity helping Sheffield’s homeless youth. Located in a vast complex of time-worn industrial buildings, in the heart of Kelham Island, Urban 1/4 is everyone’s dream loft style apartment with burgers on tap. Luckily for you it’s right next to the halls of residence and makes the perfect start to any night out.

Old House

We hope the Sunday lunch tradition hasn’t changed since we were at uni, as they were some what of an institution. You’d wake up bleary eyed on Sunday, morning early afternoon, in desperate need sustenance. Then stumble down to your local for a Sunday roast and some hair of the dog, with the hope that it’ll be as good your parents. Take our word for it, and make the Old House’s your local.

The Leadmill, it doesn’t really need any introduction. They have hosted some of the best up and coming artists of our time and previous generations and in the words of Arcade Fire, ‘Playing The Leadmill is a rite of passage for any band worth their salt’. But that’s not all they do, they also hosts weekly club nights, comedy events, cinema screenings and much more. Rumour has it Sheffield Hallam Uni are hosting a fresher’s night there with tickets available at the SU.

Wick at Both Ends

Known as “The Wick” to its devote fans, is the kind of place you go in for one and end up staying the whole night. The Wick established itself in 2010 as the first absinthe bar in Sheffield and continues to offer a unique range of absinthe and cocktails. The Harley & the Twisted Burger Company

The Harley is a rite of passage, with some of the most outrageous events in the city happen behind these very walls. Ask any post-grad where’s worth going and they’ll undoubtedly say the Harley. The Climbing Works

If you take the two world class universities out of the equation, the Peak District is an overwhelming strong magnet for climbers, mountain bikers, road cyclist and other outdoor enthusiasts. And if you’re looking to hone your skills in the dry, then look no further than the Climbing Works. Well regarded as one of the best dedicated bouldering walls in the world let alone the country.
