Meet the maker – Grey suit clay

Grey Suit Clay has a desire to create products which you will make you as happy using them every day as they are making it.

After being inspired by Upshot espresso on their choice of perfect mug, we were intrigued and took it upon ourselves to find out more about the company behind it. Grey suit clay have a genuine love of all things creative, original and well-made and this is what propels this business. A place where it is not about making the most products, but is about making the best products.

Tell us about yourself, and how did it all come about?

My parents were both Artists, and my brothers and I spent the majority of our childhood traveling around the country to numerous fairs and shows with them, selling their wares. I was raised in a workshop and I think that independent way of life was ground into me pretty early on..

After moving from North Wales to Sheffield to study Fine Art in 2003, I spent quite a few years trying to find my feet in what I wanted to do. For a long while I was focused on painting, portraiture mostly – But ultimately I was just drawn to clay.

I enrolled in a college night class a few summers ago to get a feel for it, invested in some ex-classroom equipment when I knew for sure I loved it, and haven’t had a chance to look back since!

Where did the name come from?

‘Grey Suit’ has been with me for a while, through a few different ventures..  The origin’s a little involved, and I think for now I might just have to leave it open to interpretation – Sorry.

When did your love for clay start?

With my parents making ceramic sculptures and models when I was young, it’s a material I’ve been around – Though not one I was ever really experienced in handling myself.

Coming back to it on my own just felt very natural, like learning something familiar right from the start. It’s so full of potential, and in all honesty, I just love getting my hands dirty!

Which is your favourite to drink tea from?

The big bottomed, tapered shape of the Dip collection mugs is naturally a form I lean towards. Visually, I think it’s clean and pleasing – I love the mix of textures in the hand – And functionally, it just keeps your tea good and hot for that bit longer, which is great for me as I’m a master of the forgotten studio brews.

Where do you make them?

I work full time out of my studio down at Bloc in the city centre – The studio is a dustbowl paradise and not somewhere I’d advise you visit if you value keeping your clothes and yourself at all pristine.

What has it been like running your own business so far?

Grey Suit Clay has had a life of its own from the start, and I’m just trying to keep up! It’s been a super steep learning curve over the last two years – Exhausting, Overwhelming and Amazing in equal measure. I’m constantly just so grateful for the support I’ve received in all its forms.

What is next for you?

This summer we’re working a few really great collaborations with some of Sheffield’s finest which should be a lot of fun, and I’m gearing up to release a new collection or two which I’m feeling pretty excited about.

What else should we know about you?

Yorkshire Gold is my tea of choice, and I have very little control of my emoji and exclamation mark overuse.. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
