Urban Pantry

Urban Pantry has been all about putting the love into local since it opened in 2012. This busy, innovative and exceedingly mouth-watering delicatessen enjoys a prime position in the thriving, bustling community of Crookes.

Opened by owner/manager Reece Lippolis, after he made a complete career change from construction management, the deli is evidence of a long passionate affair with food, starting with an Italian lineage and cementing with his firm Yorkshire roots.

The deli makes a big feature of selling locally produced products in its convenient, urban setting with the aim of bringing the country to the city. Favourites include Our Cow Molly milk and ice cream from Dungworth, Gerry’s bread from Walkley, Just Preserves jams and chutneys from central Sheffield and Moss Valley sausages and burgers from Norton.

Another major feature is the cheese counter which stocks a wide range of cheeses from the Yorkshire region, the UK and abroad. Ask about their cheeseboards! And although there is an emphasis on local products, you can also find lots of typical Mediterranean deli items too.

If you’re looking for gift ideas this is a great place to go. Their hampers can be created to bespoke specifications or you can choose something suitable from the pre-designed collection. Made in Sheffield and Made in Yorkshire hampers are particular favourites but there is plenty of choice and Reece and his team make these up all year round for customers but especially at Christmas time. They can be delivered (usually the next day) too which makes them even more convenient when trying to get a present to someone.

A coffee bar has recently been added in the shop window allowing customers to sit and enjoy a coffee and watch the world go by or catch up with friends. Add a cannoli (tasty Sicilian pastry), sandwich or sharing deli platter to the mix and it’s a pretty heavenly spot to be.

One of the great things about this deli is its relaxed, friendly atmosphere. You don’t have to feel awkward asking about anything, in fact you can often try things for free, and the staff are more than happy to share their knowledge about the products.

Tasting and meet the producer events are held regularly and you can find out about these in advance from the Urban Pantry website and newsletter. Their beer and cheese and wine and cheese events are also hugely popular and you can buy tickets for the public meets or book your own private one.

The range of products and services offered for events has been increasing and Urban Pantry is one of the main suppliers of cheese wedding cakes in the region. They also supply cheese boards, deli buffets and gift hampers and you can choose from a decent selection of wine, prosecco, champagne, spirits, local cider and local beer.

If you haven’t already checked them out, do it, you won’t be disappointed.
