Coffee & Cafes

Somewhere Else Coffee

“Fancy going for a coffee?”

“Yeah sure, where do you want to go, the usual?”

“How about Somewhere Else?”

“Ok but where?”

“No I mean Somewhere Else Coffee on Ecclesall Road!”

The unusual name definitely fits with this quirky little coffee shop at the Bannercross parade of shops on Ecclesall Road. Opened by mother and daughter, Caroline and Katie, just over a year ago it has been flourishing ever since. The backbone, like most coffee houses is friendly service and great, in this case local, produce.

Bannercross is a hive of activity whether it be a busy commuter stopping by on their way to and from work or local residents going for a potter and peruse in shop windows. With a butchers, a bakers (no candle stick makers, yet!), a grocers, a post office and loads of other small retailers it really does have pretty much everything you could need, except a coffee shop! With the opening of Somewhere Else, commuters and locals can now get their coffee fix whilst going about their daily chores, errands, rituals, life or whatever you like to call it.

When first walking past Somewhere Else and peering in through the window I was reminded of a friend’s New York apartment; lots of exposed reclaimed timber and steel gives an old, industrial feel but with added warmth and comfort from artwork and soft furnishings. I could imagine holing up in there on a cold winter’s days, fingers busy on a keyboard while sipping hot chocolate, coffee or tea.

The quirky nature of this place is definitely cemented by the cartoon ‘grafters’ that are all over the walls and menus. Just like Caroline and Katie, they aren’t shy of hard work and symbolise everything that’s good about Sheffield.  Other artwork upstairs is all by local artists and the pair ask for no commission on pieces sold, just a small donation that is given to the Sheffield Children’s Hospital.

Not only have the duo created a friendly and warm environment in which to enjoy your tasty beverage or snack but they support local artists, which in turn supports a local hospital and they also support local companies with what produce they, use. North Star roasts their coffee, their tea is provided by Birdhouse and the hot chocolate is courtesy of Kokoa!

So if you’re passing by or nipping to the post office why not pop in to the quirky Somewhere Else and enjoy great produce and a friendly service.

“I am glad we went Somewhere Else today”

“Yeah it’s always good to try something new, especially as Sheffield has so many great places!”
