Hop Hideout

“Beer is people”

– Garrett Oliver, Brooklyn Brew master.

The beer revolution is surging forwards in the UK; the variety is ever increasing, people are being more adventurous and events seem to be growing in size, popularity and frequency. Now I know that we have always loved our beer and there has always been a tremendous social aspect that comes hand in hand with ‘having a pint’ but the emphasis seems to have changed; the wider market seems to have increased interest in what they are drinking and the desire to experience something new and unusual.

Sheffield is a great place for beer lovers; within a few hours drive there are a whole host of breweries but how do you find out what might suit your palate? Step up Jules and Will at Hop Hideout on Abbeydale Road. After meeting in Birmingham (whilst Jules was working at a brewery) they were looking for somewhere to settle down and start their own business. Both had friends and family connections to Sheffield, making the leafy city an attractive option for their move and luckily for all you beer lovers, they haven’t looked back since.

Just like another Independent Sheffield member, Frankly my Deer, they started life in a small section of Vintedge at the Broadfield traffic lights on Abbeydale Road in November 2013. After just over a year they had outgrown the space and so picked up all their belongings and moved next door.

Having that bit more space has really allowed them to flourish; stocking beers from all over the UK and the world, hosting events like ‘Meet the Brewers’ (such as Northern Monk Brew Co and Mad Hatter) and co-organsing the first Sheffield Beer Week in March 2015. They have also hooked up with local businesses like Picture House Social; curating a selection of interesting and unique beers, as well co-hosting beer festivals at the venue.

With all this enthusiasm it’s not a surprise that in January 2015 they won a regional retailer award from the trade publication Off Licence News; something that they were both pretty chuffed about.

With over 400 beers and 25 ciders and perries stocked, 2 draught kegs that rotate for in shop consumption or taking home, events in and out of the shop and a genuine enthusiasm for all things beery, they truly are a tremendous neighbourhood bottle shop.

So if you fancy a change, or want a beer to suit the season (or even a cheese), or just touch up on your beer knowledge then why not pop in and have a chat; their passion is infectious and with 10% off (Independent Sheffield card holders only) when you spend over £10 you really can’t go wrong.

We started with a quote and so we will finish with a quote, from a brewery located a stones throw from Hop Hideout (a collaborative beer is coming soon!):

“There’s nothing more social than beer.” – Abbeydale Brewery

Very simple and very true, so Sheffield, enjoy socialising and this wonderful beery independent.

*10% off when spending over £10 (non redeemable against event tickets, vouchers, growler bottles, spirits)
